Title of the role: Product Engineer

Location: Remote (U.S.)

Company Stage of Funding: early-stage healthcare startup

Office Type: Remote

Salary: $160,000 – $240,000 USD base salary + stock options

The Client

Our client is an early-stage healthcare startup rethinking health insurance to reduce friction for doctors and patients. They work closely with direct primary care providers and build backend systems that make insurance easier to use, more affordable, and more human.

As a Product Engineer, you will join a 5-person engineering team, where backend systems and data pipelines directly power claims processing, provider payments, EHR integrations, and internal healthcare operations. Your work will sit at the core of the business, ensuring providers are paid accurately, patients receive seamless care, and internal teams can scale efficiently.

You will work cross-functionally with Operations, Engineering, and other stakeholders to translate complex healthcare workflows into reliable, production-grade systems. This role reports into engineering leadership and offers significant ownership in shaping the company’s data platform as it grows and launches new products.

Your work will have a direct, real-world impact on how healthcare is delivered and paid for.

What You’ll Do

The engineering team builds backend and data systems that power modern health insurance. In this role, you will:

  • Design, build, and scale data pipelines and backend systems supporting claims, payments, and healthcare operations
  • Develop automations for provider notifications, patient support workflows, and internal operations
  • Own data flows across ingestion, transformation, validation, and persistence
  • Partner cross-functionally with Operations, Engineering, and business stakeholders to understand workflows and reduce manual overhead
  • Rapidly prototype solutions and refactor them into clean, maintainable production code
  • Contribute to the long-term evolution of the data platform as data volume and product scope increase

Example Projects You Might Work On

  • Building and scaling Python-based pipelines to generate and process insurance claims on behalf of providers
  • Developing EHR integrations to ingest, normalize, and validate healthcare data from multiple vendors
  • Designing provider payment and reimbursement workflows to ensure accurate, timely payouts
  • Automating patient support and internal operational workflows to reduce manual intervention
  • Refactoring existing backend systems to improve reliability, observability, and scalability

Basic Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience (4+ years considered for exceptional candidates)
  • Strong Python experience, including refactoring and maintaining production code
  • Experience designing and operating data pipelines, ETLs, or backend systems at scale
  • Experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL
  • Strong communication skills and ability to explain technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders
  • Comfort working in ambiguous, fast-moving startup environments

Preferred Requirements

  • Startup experience, especially at 10–50 person companies
  • Familiarity with Flask, FastAPI, SQLAlchemy
  • Experience working with large or messy datasets
  • Healthcare or healthtech experience (claims, EHRs, vendor integrations)
  • Thoughtful experience using AI tools in regulated environments

What We Offer

  • Fully remote role (U.S.-based)
  • Competitive compensation: $160,000–$240,000 base salary + stock options
  • Flexible / unlimited paid time off
  • Medical insurance
  • Multiple annual onsite events in NYC and key markets
  • Opportunity to build mission-critical infrastructure with real-world impact
