5 Job Application Tips from High Schoolers Who Landed Summer Jobs

As summer ends, about 200 Champaign students are wrapping up jobs found through Champaign Unit 4 School District’s Youth Employment Services (YES) program. This program helps students learn everything from crafting a resume to acing interviews. Here are five tips from these experienced high schoolers for anyone applying to jobs.

1. Look for Jobs You Can Enjoy

Centennial High School freshman Jaziyah Clark advises: "Find a job you can be yourself in." She believes this leads to your best performance. Clark secured a spot in an art-related group job, painting a mural, and loved sketching faces and touching up lines. The YES program includes lunches with guest speakers and scenario training to prepare students.

2. Don’t Overthink Job Requirements

Malakai Hyman, a rising sophomore, learned that job requirements aren't always strict. He applied for a welding sculpture job despite being under 18, and his fire and workplace safety certifications made him an exception. He says, "They had requirements that I couldn’t have done... but they would have hired me anyway because of my experience."

3. Include Keywords from the Job Description in Your Resume

Reggie Jones, a rising sophomore, emphasizes tailoring your resume: "Take 30-40 minutes to look at the job and find keywords to put into your resume." This shows employers you've read the description and are a good fit.

4. Smile During Your Interview

Kiry Orellana, a Central High School graduate, shares: "Smiling gives the conversation a better mood and helps you get comfortable." She learned this from YES Program Supervisor Amanda Danowitz and used it to land an HR internship with Champaign County.

5. Don’t Get Discouraged by Rejection

Jade Wolf, a rising junior and the only female in the welding program, reminds: "No matter how many times you get rejected, there’s always one job out there for you." She encourages persistence and pursuing careers even in male-dominated fields.

These tips come from real experiences, showing that with the right mindset and preparation, anyone can succeed in their job search.
