The son of All Blacks legend Ma’a Nonu is making waves in the basketball world. Mercury Nonu, a combo guard from Scots College, flashed immense promise in his Rapid League debut, a development matchup that precedes NBL games. Playing all but 34 seconds of the 16-minute game, he led his team with 10 points, shooting 4-of-8 from the field and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. He also added 3 assists in an encouraging performance.
Nonu, who has been training with the Wellington Saints all year, got his first full roster callup for this trip. While he wasn't required to play in the main NBL matchup (won 104-90 by the Southland Sharks), his Rapid League showing suggests his first NBL minutes may not be far away.
Before the trip, Nonu told The Post that he first got into basketball while living in San Diego, where his father was playing Major League Rugby. He made the tough decision to focus on basketball over rugby at age 15 and is now chasing high ambitions on the court, calling his callup to the Saints a "dream come true."
The Saints struggled in the main game despite a standout 43-point performance from Aussie import Elijah Pepper. The Sharks, led by Americans Caleb Asberry and Rylan Jones with 26 points each, improved their win streak to seven.
