Summary:

  • Don't internalize a layoff—it's often due to restructuring, not your performance.

  • Network consistently on LinkedIn; only 1% of users are active regularly, giving you an edge.

  • Use AI tools to strengthen your resume, cover letters, and interview prep.

  • View a layoff as an opportunity to reevaluate goals and pivot to a more fulfilling career.

Losing a job can be a financial and emotional shock, and with layoffs continuing across major industries, experts say workers facing that reality should focus on perspective, networking, and new tools to move forward.

Companies like Nike and Meta recently announced major layoffs, leaving many employees wondering how to reenter the job market. But experts emphasize that job loss affects more than just your paycheck—it can undermine your confidence and make the job search even harder. The key? Don't internalize the layoff.

"I think it's really important that regardless of whether or not it's due to a restructuring or something else, that people really don't internalize a layoff," says Monique Kelley, who teaches a career readiness course at Boston University.

The Power of Consistent Networking

Kelley stresses the importance of networking even when you're not actively job hunting. LinkedIn is a goldmine: with 1.2 billion users, but only 1% using it regularly (about three times a week), there's a huge opportunity. Instead of saying "I need a job," use LinkedIn to showcase your work: "Here's the work that I've been doing or can do."

Embrace AI as a Job Search Tool

While AI is often blamed for layoffs, it can actually strengthen your applications. "I'm teaching my students to not be afraid of AI, but to embrace it, and see how you can use it to actually be a stronger candidate," Kelley says. Use AI tools to refine your resume, tailor cover letters, and practice interview questions.

Turn a Layoff into an Opportunity

A layoff can be a chance to reevaluate your goals, change career paths, and pursue work that aligns with your passions. Use this time to reflect on what you truly want and take steps toward a more fulfilling career.
