As many new college graduates face difficulties securing employment, career expert Brandi Britton offers strategies to help them stand out in the competitive job market.
Treat your job search like a full-time job
“It’s really important for them to treat looking for their next opportunity like a full-time job,” said Britton, executive director and career expert at recruiting firm Robert Half.
Flexibility is key
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York recently released unemployment data showing that nearly 6% of recent college graduates are unemployed, which is about two percentage points higher than the national unemployment rate. Britton noted that flexibility in job location and starting salary can increase opportunities for graduates.
Get noticed and secure interviews
A survey conducted by Robert Half revealed that 71% of Gen Z respondents identified getting noticed and securing an interview as their biggest challenge. Britton advised graduates to actively communicate their job search status.
Leverage your network and resources
She also recommended working with a mentor, utilizing school career services, connecting with alumni in the desired field, and highlighting college experiences to demonstrate relevant skills. Before interviews, Britton advised researching the company and preparing questions.
Consider contract work
“Consider contract work. That’s a great way for new grads to get additional skills. You never know where that can turn out,” Britton said.
Patience pays off
Career experts estimate that it can take college graduates three to six months to secure employment, urging patience during the process.
