Intern - Data Analyst
Job Description
Posted on: July 27, 2026
This internship focuses on extracting clarity from complex financial data to support our ongoing work with a Rome-based infrastructure client. You will help our team scrutinize the assumptions that drive their capital allocation decisions and ensure the underlying numbers match the operational reality. About Blue Oak Consulting Blue Oak Consulting provides independent advisory on pricing, portfolio economics, capital allocation, and acquisition assumptions. We are not a traditional consulting firm focused on broad transformation programs or high level strategy decks. Instead, we interrogate specific commercial decisions where the financial stakes are high and the existing narrative is not sufficient. Our team looks past corporate language and P&L complexity to identify where value is leaking or capital is trapped. We work across sectors like software, manufacturing, and healthcare to test whether the assumptions behind a growth plan or an acquisition actually hold under pressure. We are a small, principal led firm where the people who do the work are the ones accountable for the results. We do not take transaction contingent fees, which allows us to be completely honest about whether the economics of a decision make sense. Our goal is to provide clarity through financial discipline and a healthy amount of skepticism. We stay through the execution phase because decisions that look sound in theory often fail when they meet real world friction. The Role As an Intern Data Analyst, you will work alongside our principals to process and interpret large datasets related to infrastructure and asset management. This is a fully remote position that requires a high degree of focus and the ability to find patterns that others might overlook in a spreadsheet. You will not be making slides just for the sake of appearances: you will be digging into transaction logs and historical performance data to see if a client proposal is grounded in fact. The work is investigative by nature, requiring you to ask why a number looks correct on the surface but feels off when compared to actual cash flow. Because we are a remote firm, you will need to be disciplined with your time and clear in your written communication. What You Will Be Doing
- Cleaning and organizing raw data from our infrastructure project to prepare it for detailed economic analysis.
- Testing the sensitivity of various pricing models to see how small changes in assumptions affect the health of a portfolio.
- Comparing internal client data against external industry benchmarks to identify discrepancies or financial risks.
- Helping build financial models that track the performance of an asset against its original investment case.
- Documenting the logic used in our analysis so it can be defended during internal reviews and client meetings.
- Identifying outliers in large datasets that could point toward operational inefficiencies or trapped capital.
- Providing summaries of data findings that avoid jargon and focus on the economic reality of the situation.
- Assisting with the validation of source data to ensure our models are built on a solid foundation.
What You Bring
- A degree or current studies in finance, economics, mathematics, or a related field with a strong focus on quantitative analysis.
- High proficiency in Excel, including the ability to manage large workbooks and use logical functions correctly.
- A healthy sense of skepticism and a willingness to question the narrative provided by a dataset.
- Strong attention to detail, especially when checking for consistency across different financial reports.
- The ability to work independently in a remote environment while maintaining regular communication with the team.
- A genuine interest in how businesses actually make money versus how they present their earnings.
- Basic knowledge of SQL or other data management tools is helpful but not mandatory for this role.
What We Offer
- A fully remote work arrangement that allows you to manage your tasks from your preferred location.
- Direct mentorship from principals who have significant experience in high stakes financial advisory.
- A paid position with a competitive rate that reflects the value of your contributions to the firm.
- Exposure to real world financial problems that go beyond what is typically taught in a university setting.
- A work culture that values accuracy, honesty, and analytical discipline over corporate politics.
- Practical experience in the infrastructure and capital allocation sector through a major client engagement.
Working at Blue Oak Consulting means taking a disciplined approach to every problem we face. We do not just hand over a report and walk away: we make sure our findings lead to better decisions and clearer results for the organizations we advise. You will be part of a team that prizes the truth above all else, even when that truth contradicts the established corporate story. This is a chance to see the direct consequences of financial modeling and to develop a sharp, analytical eye that will serve you throughout your career in finance or consulting.
