Hours: Variable: approx. 2 hours per week
About the Role
The Journal of Architecture is jointly published by RIBA and Taylor & Francis. It was launched in 1995 and is the longest standing, continuously published, international, refereed publication on architecture based in the UK. It has become widely recognised as one of the foremost journals in its field.
We are recruiting a highly motivated and organised Reviews Editor to commission and develop a redefined reviews section of The Journal of Architecture.
The Reviews Editor is part of a wider editorial team. They will collaborate with the Editor in Chief, Executive Editor and four co-editors to deliver journal issues on schedule and promote its reputation, academic success and prosperity.
Main responsibilities include:
- Developing and curating a redefined reviews section of The Journal of Architecture, which includes book, film and literature reviews on key topics in the field, and critical reflections on exhibitions, conferences and other events.
- Commissioning and liaising with contributors to produce critically engaged and timely review content.
- Identifying underexplored themes and curating contributions that speak to emergent debates and neglected areas in architecture and the architectural social sciences and humanities.
- Editing and preparing final versions of reviews for submission to the Executive Editor and publication.
- Liaising with publishers and institutions to secure review materials (e.g. books, exhibition catalogues).
- Ensuring completion of author copyright assignment agreements and that image permissions are secured.
- Contributing to the journal’s public and digital presence by supporting the development of short summaries of published articles for use on the journal’s website and across social media platforms.
- Supporting the implementation of the journal’s wider editorial strategy in consultation with the Editor-in-Chief and Executive Editor.
- Working collaboratively with the RIBA and T&F to promote the journal’s academic standing and public visibility.
What are we looking for?
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Experience in commissioning, writing and editing for a scholarly audience
- Knowledge of the context of research and scholarship in architecture are a prerequisite.
- An active interest in current cultural, social and technical themes and discussion in architecture.
- A background in the architectural social sciences or humanities, including architectural technologies and sustainable design, would be ideal.
