Mercor is partnering with a globally recognized AI research lab to support a project aimed at improving how tax and financial data are interpreted, verified, and presented. This role is ideal for experienced U.S. tax professionals (CPAs, Enrolled Agents, or similar) who are adept at reviewing a wide range of tax filings and producing clear, structured insights. This is a flexible, remote, short-term engagement, with potential for extension based on performance and project needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and analyze various U.S. individual tax returns (federal and state)
- Extract concise, accurate insights including filing status, income types, deductions, and refund or balance due drivers
- Identify year-over-year changes and surface edge cases such as multi-state filings, AMT, amended returns, or unusual credits
- Develop verification checklists and follow-up questions to ensure data accuracy and resolve ambiguities
- Flag inconsistencies or potential anomalies for further review
Return Types & Scenarios
- Federal: Form 1040/1040-SR, 1040X, Schedules A–E, SE, W-2, 1099s (NEC, INT, DIV, B, R, K), K-1
- State: All 50 states, including jurisdictions with unique tax structures (e.g., NYC, Philadelphia)
- Filing Statuses: Single, MFJ, MFS, HOH, QSS
- Common Themes: Employment, self-employment, rentals, capital gains, retirement distributions, education credits, EITC/CTC, foreign income, rollovers/conversions, property transactions, AMT, and NOLs
Qualifications
- CPA or EA designation with a minimum of 4 years of hands-on U.S. tax preparation experience
- Strong familiarity with the 1040 ecosystem and state-level tax filings, including part-year/nonresident and amended returns
- Exceptional attention to detail with sound judgment on materiality and data quality
- Clear written communication skills to document findings and flag key issues
- Ability to follow confidentiality protocols and deliver consistent output independently
Contract Details
- Remote, asynchronous work model with flexible hours
- Independent contractor engagement
- Compensation: $50–$60 USD/hour, based on experience
- Payment via Stripe Connect
- Initial engagement includes a brief pilot phase to align expectations
