Koala is looking for an Energy Market Analyst to join our team. At Koala, we're building the platform that lets households, energy communities and professionals finally participate in the energy market instead of being priced by it. Before we can build the market we want, we need to read the market that exists — precisely, continuously, and better than others. That's your job.
💡 Your Responsibilities
- Monitor and analyse the Italian power market end to end — day-ahead, intraday, ancillary services and balancing, capacity and storage mechanisms — and maintain a working comparative view of the European markets Italy is coupled to.
- Produce price and scenario analysis: price formation, spreads, volatility, seasonality, and the drivers behind them, with a clear read on where the market is heading and why.
- Evaluate, price and stress-test PPAs and flexibility contracts — physical vs. virtual structures, pay-as-produced vs. baseload, indexation, shape and profile risk, volume and credit risk. Support commercial negotiations with quantitative analysis that holds up under pressure, and with recommendations you're willing to defend.
- Track regulatory developments — ARERA, GSE, GME, Terna, and the European framework behind them — covering dispatching reform, energy sharing rules, aggregation and BSP requirements, and storage procurement.
- Translate regulation into consequences: what a new resolution means for Koala's roadmap, pricing, business model and risk exposure, written so that product and management can act on it.
- Represent Koala in public consultations, position papers and industry working groups, and build the institutional relationships that come with it.
- Build and maintain the economic models behind assets and portfolios — capex, opex, LCOE, revenue stacking, sensitivity analysis — because a market view that ignores what a plant costs is not a market view.
- Make the market legible to the rest of the company: short, usable briefings that turn a complex sector into shared knowledge instead of private expertise.
🎓 What We're Looking For
- 3–5 years of relevant experience in power markets — utility, trading desk, BSP/aggregator, energy consultancy, TSO/DSO, regulator, developer, or infrastructure fund.
- A degree in Economics, Finance, Engineering, Statistics, Physics, or a related field. We care far more about your command of the subject than about which faculty you came from: a strong non-engineering background is genuinely welcome here.
- Real, operational knowledge of the Italian electricity market: how prices form, who the counterparties are, how dispatching and settlement actually work, and where the rules are moving. Working knowledge of European electricity market design — market coupling, cross-border capacity, and how the main national markets differ from ours.
- Familiarity with PPA structures and contract economics, and with the risks hidden in them. Comfort with data: advanced Excel, and ideally Python or SQL, so you can pull and model market data yourself rather than wait for someone else to.
- Excellent analytical judgement — the ability to reach a defensible answer with incomplete information, and to say clearly how confident you are.
- Ability to communicate complex market and regulatory concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences alike.
- Strong knowledge of the English language; Italian is required to work first-hand with national regulation.
- A proactive, autonomous and collaborative mindset, comfortable in a company where the answer often doesn't exist yet.
- "Cazzimma" — the determination and tenacity to keep pushing until the number, the clause, or the rule finally makes sense!
