While your qualifications and answers matter, your appearance and mannerisms can make or break a job interview. Research shows that 51% of employers have rejected candidates due to their looks, including scruffy clothes or poorly dyed hair. Here’s how to leverage your appearance to stand out positively.

## Why Appearance Matters

**First impressions** are formed within seconds. Studies indicate that attractive individuals are often perceived as more trustworthy and intelligent, leading to higher hiring rates. However, attractiveness isn't just about facial features—it includes clothing, grooming, and confidence.

**Professor Min-Hsuan Tu** from the University of Buffalo explains that good-looking people often develop better communication skills and confidence due to positive reinforcement from childhood. But you can enhance your appearance through deliberate choices.

## Real-Life Success Stories

**Taya Reed**, a 23-year-old graduate, secured her dream job at a fashion company by dressing to align with the company culture. She wore an all-white ensemble for her interview, which sparked conversation and showed she fit in. **Matt Cohen**, a marketing graduate, wore a button-down shirt and groomed his beard to appear professional, even though the company dress code was casual. He also mastered non-verbal cues like eye contact and nodding.

## Practical Tips for Interview Success

- **Dress for the role**: Research the company culture and dress slightly more formally than the norm. This signals professionalism and respect.
- **Groom carefully**: Trim facial hair, style hair neatly, and ensure clothes are clean and pressed.
- **Use non-verbal cues**: Maintain eye contact, nod, and sit upright to show engagement.
- **Boost confidence**: When you look good, you feel more confident, which improves performance. **Madeline Drucker** says, "When I feel like I look good, I feel more confident and perform better."
- **Manage stress**: Use techniques like deep breathing or pretend the interviewers are friends to stay calm.

**Career coach Caroline Hickey** emphasizes that a polished appearance sends an unconscious signal that you take the opportunity seriously. It also helps interviewers envision you in the role.

## Key Takeaways

- **Appearance influences hiring decisions** more than you think.
- **Dress to fit the company culture** while maintaining professionalism.
- **Grooming and non-verbal communication** are equally important.
- **Confidence from looking good** can enhance your interview performance.

Remember, your appearance is a tool to complement your skills, not replace them. Use it wisely to make a lasting impression.

While you need to answer the questions in an interview, your appearance and mannerisms are also crucial.

How Your Appearance Can Land You the Job: Expert Tips to Ace the Interview

Panel interviews can be nerve-wracking, especially for biopharma professionals more comfortable with scientific work than communication. Proper preparation is key, and it's more complex than preparing for a one-on-one interview. Here are expert tips to help you ace panel interviews.

## Getting Ready: Research and Identify Your Secret Sauce

**Understand the role** you're interviewing for. Responsibilities can vary by organization. If anything is unclear, email the recruiter or previous interviewer for clarification before the panel.

**Research the panelists** on LinkedIn or Google. Know their titles, roles, and areas of expertise. This helps you understand what the organization values and tailor your answers accordingly. For example, if a salesperson is on the panel, ensure your answers are understandable to a non-scientific audience.

**Avoid discounting panelists** based on superficial traits like title or age. Everyone's opinion matters.

**Identify your secret sauce**—what makes you different from other candidates with similar experience and education. Prepare 2-3 compelling accomplishments where you played a major role in a successful outcome. Write them out to break down challenges and results.

## At the Interview: Make Conversation and Don't Snub Peers

**Connect with panelists** to make the interview feel like a dialogue, not a performance. Ask questions that reveal how the role operates and why it's being filled, such as:
- "What is one skill so crucial to this role that it can't be done well without it?"
- "How did you work with the person in this role before?"
- "What is your ideal way of working with the person in this role?"

**Address concerns directly** by asking:
- "Do you have any hesitancy about my fit for this role?"
- "Now that we've talked, how do you see me fitting in?"
- "Is there anything you hoped I'd share that we didn't touch on?"

**Ask for clarification** if you don't understand a question. Panelists may judge you on whether you seek clarity.

**Don't overlook peer-level panelists** in favor of higher-ranking ones. Peers often have significant influence on hiring decisions, even if they don't ask questions. Their perception of working with you is crucial.

Panel interviews can play a major role in getting jobs. Two career coaches discuss what to do before and during the interview, including identifying how to differentiate yourself, engaging in true conversations and not overlooking a key panel member.

**Professional Appearance**
Your appearance sets the tone before you even speak. Choose business attire in advance, ensuring it's properly ironed and fits well. Polish your shoes, keep accessories subtle, and maintain personal grooming. Avoid overpowering fragrances that might distract from your qualifications.

**Research the Company**
Thoroughly investigate the organization through its website, social media, press releases, and recent articles. Familiarize yourself with current industry developments to demonstrate engagement and contribute meaningfully to sector conversations.

**Know Your Value**
Review the job description carefully to anticipate questions about your personality, skills, experience, and qualifications. Identify what distinguishes you from other candidates and highlight your unique strengths confidently without appearing arrogant.

**Create a Strong First Impression**
Arrive at least 10 minutes early to relax and gather your thoughts. Upon arrival, clearly state your name, appointment time, and interviewer's name in a friendly manner. Bring relevant documentation including your interview invitation, resume, and cover letter. Turn off your mobile phone before entering the interview room.

**During the Interview**
Listen carefully to each question and provide concise answers supported by relevant examples. Ask for clarification when needed and speak clearly at a moderate pace. Stay relaxed by using techniques like deep breathing or silent mantras to manage nervousness.

**Effective Body Language**
Give each interviewer a firm handshake at the beginning and end. Maintain a relaxed but alert posture with a friendly expression and consistent eye contact throughout the conversation. Your nonverbal communication reinforces the impression you're creating.

**Master the STAR Technique**
When answering competency-based questions, structure responses using the STAR method: describe the **Situation**, outline the **Task**, explain your **Action**, and highlight the **Result**. Develop multiple examples from various aspects of your life and keep them updated throughout your career.

**Handle Challenging Questions**
Prepare for difficult topics like employment gaps, poor academic results, or previous terminations. Answer honestly without defensiveness or blame. Transform these questions into positive statements showing how you overcame difficulties and what you learned.

**Ask Thoughtful Questions**
Prepare questions about progression opportunities, professional development support, or company expansion plans. Demonstrate genuine enthusiasm and interest, but avoid asking basic questions you should already know, or questions simply for the sake of asking.

**End Positively**
If not mentioned, ask when to expect a selection decision and what the next steps involve. Thank the interviewer and reiterate your enthusiasm for the position. A strong closing reinforces your interest and professionalism.

Following these strategies will significantly improve your interview performance and increase your chances of securing the position.

## The Rise of AI-Powered Job Scammers

As **deepfake tools** and **voice cloning** become cheaper and more convincing, employers are increasingly encountering a troubling trend: fraudsters using **artificial intelligence (AI)** to create fake appearances, voices, or profiles to land remote jobs. In addition to the risk of hiring unqualified applicants, the practice raises significant concerns about individuals trying to **steal company trade secrets**, install **malware** on company-owned devices, or engage in other subversive activities.

### Quick Hits

- Some scammers are using **AI to fake their voice and image** during video interviews
- This trend raises the risk that employers could experience **poor performance by unqualified workers**, **cyberattacks**, **theft of sensitive data**, or **embezzlement**
- **Careful hiring strategies** can help employers prevent these schemes

### The Hidden Dangers of Fake Identities

The last thing employers want to do is to hire a person with a fake identity—whether the person's goal is to obtain a job for which they are not qualified, steal data or money, or install spyware or ransomware on company devices. If the hiring process is rushed or inconsistent, it is easy for companies to fall victim to this kind of scheme. In January 2025, the **Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)** warned employers about the growing threat from North Korean IT workers infiltrating U.S. companies to steal sensitive data and extort money.

Online job postings have made it easier for employers to reach a wide pool of candidates across the United States, but it also has led to an environment where one job posting might draw thousands of applications, making it more difficult for hiring managers to sort through and find the best talent. The rise of **remote work** since 2020 has further complicated matters, as it can make it more difficult to detect when a new hire previously faked his or her voice or image during the interview process.

### Risk Reduction Strategies

To reduce the risk of hiring someone with a fake identity, employers may wish to consider these strategies:

- Relying on **in-person interviews** whenever possible; otherwise, using **live video with cameras** and applying simple, neutral authenticity checks, such as turning the head, waving a hand, or reading a randomly selected sentence to detect overlay artifacts
- Conducting **multiple interview rounds** with role-specific questions designed to elicit concrete details
- Asking interview questions designed to elicit specific details about the applicant's location and personal background (while, of course, avoiding questions prohibited by employment discrimination laws)
- **Scrutinizing resumes and applications** for typos, unusual terminology, and inconsistencies with public profiles
- **Verifying identity**, work authorizations, education, and employment history through legally compliant methods, and making job offers contingent upon successful verification
- Contacting and verifying the applicant's **professional references**
- **Training hiring managers** to spot red flags in video interviews (e.g., lip-sync issues, abnormal lighting, or lagging inconsistent with audio)

Ironically, there are **AI tools that can help employers spot fake job applicants**, but employers may want to use those tools cautiously with vendor diligence and human review.

### Legal Compliance Considerations

Employers may want to ensure that any screening, background checks, and AI-assisted tools are used in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws. This includes **"ban-the-box" rules** on criminal history inquiries and timing; background check disclosures, authorizations, and pre-adverse/adverse action procedures; **automated decision-making regulations**; and **biometric identifier rules**. In addition, employers may wish to coordinate recruitment policies and practices with IT security and privacy professionals.

As deepfake tools and voice cloning become cheaper and more convincing, employers are increasingly encountering a troubling trend: fraudsters using artificial intelligence (AI) to create fake appearances, voices, or profiles to land remote jobs. In addition to the risk of hiring unqualified applicants, the practice raises significant concerns about individuals trying to steal company trade secrets, install malware on company-owned devices, or engage in other subversive activities.

Don't Get Fooled: How to Spot AI-Powered Fake Job Applicants Before It's Too Late

Walking into an interview without relevant experience can be intimidating, but confidence and preparation can help bridge that gap. Career coach Andrew LaCivita, through his YouTube channel, explained that even when experience is lacking, candidates can still impress recruiters with the right approach. His advice revolves around structuring responses into three clear sections.

### Step One: Acknowledge the Gap

Instead of pretending to have done something you haven’t, LaCivita suggests being upfront. Clearly state that you have not yet had the opportunity to work with a specific tool, system, or process. This **honesty** sets the right tone and ensures you are not overstating your capabilities.

### Step Two: Build on Similar Experiences

Once you acknowledge the lack of direct exposure, the next step is to connect it with something familiar. For example, if you haven’t worked with one software system but have mastered another that operates in a comparable way, mention that. The same principle applies to processes, methodologies, or tasks. Drawing these parallels shows **adaptability** and gives employers confidence that your skills are transferable.

### Step Three: Demonstrate a Learning Strategy

The final piece of the answer is about showcasing how you approach unfamiliar situations. LaCivita emphasized that professionals face new challenges almost daily. Employers want to see how quickly you can adjust and learn. Sharing your personal method—such as researching, seeking guidance, practicing, and applying knowledge—illustrates **resilience** and problem-solving skills. It conveys to the interviewer that even without prior experience, you have a reliable process to become proficient quickly.

### What Recruiters Actually Hear

By following this structure, interviewers come away with three impressions: first, you do not misrepresent yourself; second, you can relate prior experiences to the new role; and third, you have a systematic approach to acquiring new skills. Employers generally prefer to hire individuals with strong traits such as **honesty**, **adaptability**, and determination, since specific technical skills can always be taught. As LaCivita notes, companies that fail to recognize this often miss out on truly successful employees.

This approach impresses recruiters by showcasing honesty, adaptability, and a systematic way to acquire new skills. Employers value these traits, recognizing that technical skills can be taught, leading to successful hires.

3 Genius Ways to Impress Interviewers When You Lack Experience

When it comes to job interviews, your **body language** can be just as crucial, and as communicative, as your resume.

According to Benjamin Granger, chief workplace psychologist at software company Qualtrics, your posture, expression and behavior are key to making a good **first impression**.

“When we meet somebody for the first time, what we don’t realize fully is that our brains are at work,” he says. “They are looking at the person’s face, they’re looking at the person’s body, they’re looking at how open or closed off they are.”

Subconsciously, those nonverbal cues influence your perception of that person, Granger says.

### **Start with a smile**

This tip may sound obvious, but “it’s amazing what a simple smile can do” to build goodwill with your interviewer, Granger says.

Whether you realize it or not, most people can actually tell whether your smile is authentic or forced, he says.

According to Granger, a “real, genuine smile” causes small wrinkles at the edges of your eyes.

### **Open up your posture**

Posture is another crucial communication tool, Granger says.

To make a good impression at a job interview, Granger recommends sitting in an “open body posture” with your shoulders back and hands separated. That body language communicates to your interviewer that you are engaged in the conversation, he says.

On the other hand, sitting in a closed body posture with crossed arms or legs might signal that you’re uninterested in the conversation, or possibly even hiding something.

Additionally, Granger says, make sure that your torso and legs are facing the interviewer squarely.

### **Deliver an even handshake**

There’s an old adage that you can learn a lot about a person through their handshake — and it’s absolutely true, Granger says.

According to Granger, there are three main types of handshake, each with a different meaning.

An even handshake is “by far the best handshake to use in business and also in interviews,” he says.

In an even handshake, you deliver a firm squeeze with your palms parallel to the other person’s. “It communicates that you view the other person as your equal,” Granger says.

The underhand handshake, in which the other person’s hand sits on top of yours, signals that you are giving them the upper hand — literally.

The opposite is true for the over-the-hand handshake, which can communicate that you are trying to assert dominance.

### **Above all, be authentic**

“The number one tip that I wish people would really believe in interviewing is just to be yourself,” Granger says.

Often, people feel like they have to “put on a show” in interviews, he says.

It’s natural to want to present the best version of yourself, but your body language will quickly reveal whether or not you are behaving authentically.

“If you fake it, they will know,” Granger says. Consciously or not, “there’s a pretty good chance that the interviewer is going to feel like something’s wrong.”

Instead, head into the interview with a positive, **confident attitude**.

“Assume that this is going to be an exciting experience,” Granger says. “Assume that you’re getting to meet somebody you’re about to work with for the next few years. That allows you to go into that meeting, meet that person for the first time, and give a really authentic, genuine smile.”

## Preparation Before, During And Ending A Job Interview

If you’re an entry-level applicant, worried about what’s on the line before an upcoming job interview, it’s only natural to feel some stress. **Preparation is your biggest ally against stress.** In the face of interview anxiety, making yourself feel as prepared as possible is key.

“The era of social media offers a unique opportunity to understand a company inside and out,” suggests doing a deep dive into the company’s online presence, including social media and professional platforms like LinkedIn. **Get to know your interviewer's background and interests, as well.** This level of preparation does more than just provide talking points; it’ll empower you with the confidence that comes from being well-informed.

During the job interview, remember that you need to do more than just passively answer the interviewer’s questions. **You’re also interviewing the company to decide if it’s a good fit for you.** This mindset can empower you from the beginning to the end of the interview.

## Ending A Job Interview With A Closing Statement

Have you ever had that sinking feeling at the end of a conversation when it feels like words are left hanging in the air? **Paying attention to how you finish the interview is like putting a period at the end of a sentence.** You don’t want the recruiter to forget you, so it’s essential to let them know why they should hire you.

An effective closing statement is a positive and brief summary of your most compelling skills and experiences that demonstrate what you have to offer the employer, along with your genuine desire to be part of the company’s team.

## Tips For Ending A Job Interview On A High Note

1. **End on an upbeat.** Express gratitude by thanking the interviewer for their time and the opportunity to learn more about the role and company. Clearly state your excitement about the position and how it aligns with your skills and goals.

2. **Ask thoughtful questions.** Show curiosity and ask about the team, culture, and future company goals. Match your responses to how they align with your personal and professional goals.

3. **Add in something the interviewer doesn’t ask about.** Have an experience, achievement, or relevance to the role/culture of the company to share at the end.

4. **Close the interview by sharing your interests and qualifications.** Reinforce how your experience aligns to the role and do it with energy.

5. **Follow up after the interview.** Always send a thank-you note after to the interviewer or team, handwritten, email, LinkedIn message, or any other medium.

## A Final Takeaway On Ending A Job Interview On A High Note

Remember, the interview is an opportunity for both job applicants and companies to assess compatibility. **Approach the interview as a conversation, not an interrogation,** where both parties explore the potential of a mutually beneficial relationship.

Experts give tips on how to prepare a resume and conduct yourself during a job interview, but tips for ending a job interview on a high note are often overlooked.
